Sure, it had its moments, like seeing the smile on a childs' face when their wish comes true or when they were able to bring closure to someone who just wanted answers. Most of the time, it felt pretty amazing to have a career here.
There were times it was hard, though. Certain wishes couldn't be fulfilled, such as ridding someone of cancer or bringing back a dead relative or pet. Those were always the worst, especially when it came to a child or a soulmate.
Those were the kinds of cases that Noah Hart tended to avoid. He couldn't stand the idea of having to send out that kind of rejection letter. Not to say that he'd never had to do it. He just didn't like it. It wasn't why he had joined the facility to begin with and it certainly wasn't why he had stayed.
That was, until one particular day, when a very interesting letter came across his desk. It was a very peculiar one and not something they had ever received before. In truth, it had probably ended up in his hands by accident, since he'd stated before that he really didn't like to handle the darker things, but this one was so odd.
It was a letter from a young woman who stated that her wish was to die.
Right away, Noah thought to just reject it. To send a simple "I'm sorry, but we can't grant that wish" and move on, yet something told him to hold off. This was almost like a cry for help and it certainly wasn't something he could just ignore.
Setting it to the side, he quickly looked up the return address on the outside of the envelope before he promptly shut his computer down and stood, grabbing his jacket. One of his coworkers, a woman named Tiffany, raised a brow at the sudden movement, watching him. “Something wrong, Hart?”
Grabbing the letter, he held it up to show her. “I'm going to take the day off to go meet this woman. This isn't the kind of request we just deny and move on from.”
She frowned before running a hand through her black hair. “Are you sure you want to do that? She might just turn around and do it herself...or call the cops on you for just showing up at her door.”
He paused. The cops weren't something he had taken into account, but what else was he supposed to do? His mind wouldn't let him rest until he tried to talk this woman out of such a request. "I'll take my chances," he said with a small smile.
With that, Noah left the building, not quite sure where his curiosity would lead him.
Today was the worse day of her life. More like the worse night. She couldn't believe that this was actually happening to her. She didn't ever think this could happen to her. That she would be on her hands and knees bawling her eyes out. The green haired female look at herself in the mirror as makeup was running down her face. She didn't know how she was going to tell everyone that the wedding was cancelled. Not because of her fault, of course. She just shook her head as her fiancé, now ex fiancé was packing his stuff. And she was hiding away in the bathroom while he got his things.
It was about 20 minutes and she didn't hear a sound from anyone. Braelynn slowly opened the bathroom door and stuck her head out and look around. She didn't hear him continuously saying sorry to her. And at this point she definitely didn't want to hear what he had to say.
Tonight was supposed to be a great night. She went on vacation with her family and had her wedding dress picked out and everything. And when she came back she caught him sleeping with another female. Her best friend to be exact. She couldn't believe that this was actually happening. Braelynn made her way to the living room and looked around. The house was a lot more emptier without his things. Then she heard a ding on her phone.
I will come get the furniture when I can.
That's all it said. She laughed because she wasn't going to be giving him anything.
It's funny how you think I'm giving you the furniture.
Braelynn felt like she was handling this very well. But at the same time, she felt like she wasn't. She shook her head, grabbed her things, and headed to the newest bar. She was going to drink her problems away. It was either that or she just go and hurt herself intentionally. Either way, both options were better than the situation she was in right now.
