Leushus sat up against a dark oak tree, a small gash on his shoulder. He was unable to walk properly, so that meant he was helpless. He hated looking helpless. Leushus peered up at the sky and from the looks of it, it seemed to be getting dark. Great. He lay down, trying to get into a comfortable position, but the pain was just unbearable.
Elizabeth was walking in the forest. she had heard rumors about the monster that lives in it. she really didn't care. she looked for herbs as she walked. she was a healer for her village. well, she wanted to be. they wouldn't take a female for a healer. she could only learn but never heal. she heard some movement and she looked towards the sound. "Hello? it's okay. i won't hurt you."
Leushus heard someone call “Hello”, and he looked up, his tail poised as if in attack mode. The only thing he heard after that were the sounds of leaves rustling and trees swaying in the strong winds. Leushus sighed, calming himself down. “Maybe it was just me”, he said to himself.
Elizabeth's eyes widen. she moved towards the sound, moving some branches out of her way. She was faced with a creature she had never seen before. "you must be the beast everyone talks about." she noticed the wound. "Do you need some help? i got some herbs that can help."
Leushus jumped at the sound of a human’s voice and he turned in the direction it came from. Standing there was a woman who didn’t look very dangerous.. but he couldn’t be too sure. With a loud hiss, he swiped his claw at the lady, “What do you want!?”, he exclaimed.
Elizabeth didn't even flinch at the claws racking across her face. she had been through worse pain. "Well, I was collecting herbs. you seem hurt." Elizabeth walked forward and touched the wound. "It doesn't look deep but it is going to get infected if you don't wrap it." She ripped the bottom of her dress and wrapped the cloth around the wound. "It's not the best but let me go back to the healer and sneak some things from him. it will help with the pain."
"Stay right here i should be back in half an hour... if not then I might not be alive." Elizabeth ran to the healer's house. she knew she would have to be quiet or she would be caught. She snuck in and grabbed herbs, potions, food, blankets, and water. She grabbed a few of her personal things and headed back to the creature.
Leushus snickered as he saw her arriving. “Looks like you made it back alive”. Tilting his head, he asked her, “Why are you wearing a dress.. in the forest”. He’d think she would probably wear adventuring gear or something silly like that.
Elizabeth had seemed to go cold and tensed at the question"Because i'm not allowed to." She set the stuff down and took out a salve and clean bandages. she unwrapped the wound and put the salve and bandages on. "There now drink this. it will help with the pain." She took out a potion and opened it.
He sniffed it, and looked at her, squinting his eyes. Leushus wasn’t so sure if he should be taking hospitality from a human, but he shrugged anyway and reached for the bottle, gulping it down. It tasted of berries and some other fruit he couldn’t place his finger on. Leushus gently placed the potion back down in front of her and asked, “What is your name?”.
"Oh how rude of me. My name is Elizabeth and I want to be a healer. my town won't let a female be a healer but at least I can learn." Elizabeth gave a sad smile. she shook her head. "sorry about that. i get into my thoughts sometimes. like everyone in town said 'i should not dream of things I can not be.' what is your name?"
"My name is Leushus... Leushus Zefel", he replied. Tilting his head at her, he asked "Why won't your people let a female be a healer? They are just as capable as anyone else...". Yet another reason Leushus thought people were weird.
"It's nice to meet you Leushus." Elizabeth wiped the blood from her face. "Because I am a female. Females are weaker than men. we should be the perfect wives for our husbands. we are only good at bearing children and taking care of the house. we are nothing without men. No men would like us if we have scars or if we are not soft." Her face had taken on a blank look. she sounded like she was reciting from memory. she blinked and looked away. "Sorry..."
Leushus was speechless and didn't really know what to say. The fact that people at her town really believed that made Leushus shake his head. Eventually, he asked "And what exactly would happen if you try to be a healer anyway?".
Elizabeth flinched. "I would get whipped." she turned away from him and lowered her dress showing bloody bandages. "I need to rewrap them but it is hard to by myself. these are from earlier today. i went into the potion room to make a new potion that I created. i wanted to see if it would work. i got caught before I could finish it."
"Yeah well, i don't know how to fight. i also don't like violence." Elizabeth unwrapped the bandages. blood poured down her back. you could see more scars after the bandages were gone. Elizabeth grabbed some clean bandages and fumbled to wrap them around her.
Leushus watched with curiosity, tensing up at the sight of blood. He really felt terrible at the fact that she was whipped. He by no means felt bad for people, but this one... he felt sad for. Leushus turned his head and moved towards a tree, laying down on his side, trying not to accidentally unwrap the cloth on his arm.
Elizabeth finally wrapped the bandages around her. it was messy and not as good as she could do but it would work. she put the stuff away and laid down on the blanket wrapping another one around her. "Wake me if you need to. it's late and I'm going to try and sleep."
Leushus nodded as he watched Elizabeth wrap herself in her blanket. He heard leaves crunching off in the distance but chose to ignore it. He drew his tail closer to him and fell asleep, feeling a lot better now that his wound wasn't aching as much. He told himself that he'd track down Elizabeth's town and personally punish the man who had whipped her.
Elizabeth tried to fall asleep. it was around 1 am when she stood up. It was too cold and her back was hurting too much. she grabbed another blanket and set it on Leushus. she checked his wound feeling satisfied that it was good. Elizabeth leaned against him feeling the warmth. "He won't mind, right?" She grabbed the blanket and leaned against him. she knew that she would be beaten when she goes back but she had a patient and she need to take care of him. she fell asleep.
Just as suddenly as it had ended, the morning arrived. Leushus' head snapped up as he felt a huge weight on his side. It was Elizabeth, who was fast asleep and leaning on him. He blinked in a daze, unsure of what to do. Since he didn't want to wake Elizabeth, he decided to just rest his head back down till she awoke.
Elizabeth woke up with a small whine. she opened her eyes glaring at the light. She looked around confused before she realized what was going on. she jumped up quickly. "Oh shit he is going to kill me. he is going to be so pissed when I go back." she started panicking.
Elizabeth looked up with fear in her eyes. "T-the healer... he took me in even though my parents are unknown. p-people say they might not be human and everyone calls me a m-monster." She looked down. "H-he only took me in so that he could have someone to gather herbs for him and do the housework."
There was a little pause before Leushus spoke out. "Take me to your town. I want to go there and see what it's like". At the mention of the healer, he bared his teeth. "Also, even though we just met, I don't want you to get harmed," he added.
Elizabeth changed the bandages and put on more salve. "It is doing good. no sign of infection. let's go." Elizabeth grabbed the stuff and took a deep breath. she was scared. She started walking to town.
Leushus trailed closely behind her, almost as if he were a guard dog. He didn't particularly enjoy going to a town full of people, but he also didn't enjoy them being bullies. In any case, this would be his first experience.
The townspeople were just coming out of their houses for the day. Elizabeth looked at the town from the forest. "That's the town. are you sure you want to continue? you can go back and let me walk the rest of the way."
Elizabeth nodded and let out a scream as the man grabbed her.
"HOW DARE YOU LEAVE WITHOUT MY PERMISSION. BY THE LOOKS OF IT YOU STOLE HERBS AND POTIONS FROM ME AND YOU WERE PLANNING ON RUNNING AWAY. HOW DARE YOU COME BACK HERE WITH A MONSTER." He raised his hand to hit her.
Elizabeth flinched back and whimpered. the townspeople had came out with weapons and were watching.
"L-leushus we need to go." Elizabeth gripped onto his fur. the townspeople have gotten closer and were ready to attack.
"Oh Bullshit who would ever love you much be friends with you." The man was able to back slap Elizabeth causing her head to hit a tree.
Elizabeth bit her tongue and looked away. she knew he was right. no one would like a woman like her. she slowly got up and looked at Leushus. "I'm sorry." she ran knowing that she would be hurt more if she stayed and that Leushus would be able to protect himself without having to worry about her.
"Wait!" Leushus called as he turned around. He shifted his focus to the healer after he noticed Elizabeth had fled. "Karma always finds a way to get back at you," he murmured, a deep rumble in his voice as he slowly backed away. Soon after, he quickly followed Elizabeth.
Leushus dashed back into the woods, looking for Elizabeth. "Elizabeth!" he shouted, looking around frantically. Finally, he spotted her curled up in the same spot where she had first seen him. "Are you alright?" He didn't notice that her head was bleeding.
The sensation of being hugged made Leushus pause and tense up. Once she let go, he said , "It's all right. I was capable of defending myself anyway". He waved his barbed tail in response to his statement.
Elizabeth nodded. "I figured you would be able to fight better if you were not worried about me. we need to go though. they will start searching for us." she turned away the back of her head covered in blood.
